Orpheus brings out the best in its youngsters

Victoria and her daughter, Sophia.

Since 1906, Ottawa audiences have enjoyed quality shows by Orpheus Musical Theatre. Our 2018-2019 season kicks off on November 16 at Meridian Theatres@Centrepointe with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a charming, visually stunning, fun and funny musical, perfectly suited for lively, family entertainment.

Based on the children’s novel by Ian Fleming (author of the James Bond series), with music and lyrics written by the Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins), Chitty is a magical story based around a wondrous, classic car with unexpected and surprising abilities. Filled with heroes, villains, bright music, lively dancing, laughter and one very special car, this spectacular show has something for everyone, the young and the young at heart!

Take a Spin with Jemima and Jeremy Potts!

Orpheus is fortunate to attract exciting examples of the region’s talent to our stage, and especially proud of our strong youth ensemble for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. With energy to burn, the enthusiasm of these 10 engaging young performers will drive their way into your hearts! Two of our young performers are featured as Jemima and Jeremy, children of inventor Caractacus Potts.

Sophia Pierce is all of eight years old but brings all the poise of a seasoned veteran to our stage as Jemima Potts. According to her mother, Victoria, Sophia’s performance career seemed to start the minute she was born and it just keeps getting better. Now with two summer acting camps under her belt, a role in Annie, gigs with the Goulbourn Junior Jubilees Choir, and even a bid to sing the national anthem at a Senators home game, Sophia and her strong vocals are ready to charm in Chitty. How does she handle schoolwork, rehearsals, and just being a kid? “I use time wisely,” is her quick, and smart, answer!

Also gracing our stage is charismatic 11 year-old Aleksander Rohozinski as Jeremy Potts. According to his mother Deirdre, at the age of two he insisted on watching Mamma Mia!, got bitten by the acting bug, and started his official performing career at age eight. Enrolled in the Stagecraft Children’s Theatre School, he’s already had several villain-type character roles in Cinderella, 101 Dalmatians and he’s now having great fun in Chitty. And get this: he looks to stage Seussical the Musical at the Elgin Street School. He manages his school workload between rehearsals and Deidre says he comes home energized and happy after time at his theatrical pursuits.

We couldn’t have dreamed of a more delightful performing duo! With their talent, passion and very evident strong support of their families, they are sure to continue great things in Ottawa’s performing arts scene.
