SUMMARY:Swan Lake and The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition in Ottawa this Autumn
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa\, Ontario\, August 2\, 2016: Canada’s Ballet Jörgen returns to Ottawa’s Centrepointe Theatre and Shenkman Arts Centre this fall with Bengt Jörgen’s celebrated production of Swan Lake and the uniquely Canadian holiday classic The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition. \nSwan Lake will play at Centrepointe Theatre for one night only on October 28\, 2016. The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition will play at the Shenkman Arts Centre on December 14-15\, 2016 and at Centrepointe Theatre for two performances on December 17\, 2016. \nSwan Lake \nChoreographed by company Artistic Director and CEO Bengt Jörgen\, this classical ballet showcases the extraordinary beauty of traditional ballet in its purest form. Adding his signature hint of Canadiana\, Jörgen has set his production in the picturesque seascape of the Louisbourg Fortress in Nova Scotia\, engaging audiences in a dialogue about national identity. \n“Swan Lake is a ballet that dancers always want to dance. We’re really excited to bring this ballet to Ottawa because it inspires us and because it is technically challenging. We are always pushing our dancers to excel at the highest level\, and this iconic work puts them through their paces. Swan Lake has a universality that people can relate to\, and it’s a very touching story of love and sacrifice\,” says Jörgen. \nCompany members will dance to Tchaikovsky’s famous score in lavish 17th century inspired costumes by acclaimed designer and Order of Canada member Robert Doyle. The ballet’s striking sets by award-winning Canadian designer Camellia Koo reflect the beauty of Canada’s national heritage parks\, with dramatic lighting by Bonnie Beecher – all highlighting over 30 performers in this ballet of ballets. \nThe Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition \nAgain featuring choreography by Bengt Jörgen and the beloved music of Tchaikovsky\, this holiday favourite continues to delight audiences of all ages. Sue LePage’s beautiful costume and set designs reflect Jörgen’s vision of a distinctly Canadian Nutcracker set in Algonquin Park – where Klara meets lumberjacks\, Mounties and woodland creatures in her dream journey\, and dancers perform against 20th Century landscape paintings by the Group of Seven and other Canadian artists. Bonnie Beecher returns with her striking lighting design that illuminates this stunning winter wonderland. Audiences continue to return to The Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition year after year to experience the magic of the holidays. \nPerformance Dates \nSwan Lake \nOctober 28 at 7:30pm – Centrepointe Theatre \nVisit www.centrepointetheatre.ca \nThe Nutcracker: A Canadian Tradition \nDecember 14 at 7pm – Shenkman Arts Centre \nDecember 15 at 1:30pm – Shenkman Arts Centre \nDecember 15 at 7pm – Shenkman Arts Centre \nVisit www.shenkmanarts.ca \nDecember 17 at 1pm – Centrepointe Theatre \nDecember 17 at 4:30pm – Centrepointe Theatre \nVisit www.centrepointetheatre.ca
