Being a tween can have its challenges. The pressure to keep up with the latest trends, hang out with the right crowd, and get good grades can seem overwhelming. But there is a lot tweens can do to make their school year productive and meaningful. Here are a few ideas:
1. Befriend the unlovable. Every grade has that one student that just doesn’t fit in. Without acceptance from their peers, that student may suffer deeply into high school and adulthood. Tweens can show maturity beyond their years by bucking
the trend, befriending classmates who are different, and sticking up for those who can’t defend themselves.
2. Support a good cause. Rally other homerooms together to support a cause that means something to you. Together, your class can plant trees or a garden to beautify your community, or help children living in poverty by buying meaningful gifts with an organization like Christian Children’s Fund of Canada. Homerooms can select items like a clean water well, fruit trees, or a goat that will provide milk for an entire family.
3. Organize a letter campaign. Who doesn’t love getting letters and pictures from kids? Tweens can ask their teachers for permission to send thoughtful letters and artwork to people who may need cheering up, like seniors at a local nursing home or Canadian soldiers who are serving overseas.
