Often an unspoken issue, bedwetting may be a cause of embarrassment for older children. But it’s a phase they’ll usually outgrow on their own. Until then, there’s help
It’s a tough situation for everyone involved. Bedwetting is hard on kids, who feel embarrassed when they have nighttime accidents, and it’s hard on parents, who want to help their kids feel better and to get some sleep themselves – and not have to do laundry every morning. Both might wonder, “is this normal?”
The answer is yes. Even though people often don’t discuss it, bedwetting is just a normal part of a child’s development, and your son or daughter certainly isn’t alone. Children learn to control daytime urination as they become aware of their bladder filling. Once this occurs, the child then learns to consciously control and coordinate his or her bladder. Nighttime bladder control usually takes more time, and is not expected until a child is between five and seven years old.
By that age, children are often too embarrassed to wear disposable nighttime underwear, or think they are “only for babies” especially when they look and feel like diapers. And then there are the smells, bulky and saggy fit, childlike designs and patterns that a kid may have long outgrown, and leakage. As a result, parents may balk at purchasing these for their children.
There’s a new product hitting shelves this month that may prove to be a game changer for many families. A new tool for parents’ arsenals, Ninjamas, a new absorbent nighttime underwear made by Pampers, is designed to be your kid’s sidekick. Comfortable, discreet and odour-masking, Ninjamas gives kids super-secret bedwetting protection that disappears stealthily under PJs. This means that kids can let their cool sides shine and enjoy a worry-free sleep with confidence, whether they are at home, at the grandparents’ house, or a sleepover with friends.
Featuring cool Ninja characters that are more age appropriate (no baby patterns and pastel colours here!), Ninjamas come in sizes that fit bigger kids. They are comfortable to wear, breathable, have highly absorbent All-Night Leak Protection to absorb wetness quickly and evenly; exclusive OdorMask™ Technology to hide any telltale odours in the case of an accident (it’s the only diaper to have this feature) and a flexible 360-degree waistband. Ninjamas offers discreet protection, with no telltale rustling sounds.
Perhaps most important to kids of this age, Ninjamas look and feel just like real underwear, allowing a child to feel less embarrassed, more confident and help him or her to wake up feeling great – and that means happier mornings for everyone.
Until then, take comfort in the fact that children will grow out of the bedwetting phase without any help. Parents and children need to know that this is a common issue. Bedwetting can start after the child is first potty trained – for 30 percent of kids, bedwetting starts two to four years later, and that it is more common than people will speak about. One in six kids will still wet the bed at age five; and one in 15 still have bedwetting beyond age eight. Children can even wet the bed into their teen years.
Parents need to act with love, patience and understanding as to not cause the child to feel embarrassed. The focus should be on managing the issue so it does not affect the child’s self-esteem or quality sleep needed for their healthy development, but the practical side of the issue can be managed with Ninjamas, as well as accessories like mattress pads, alarms and tactics including restricting water before bedtime to manage bedwetting.
Remember, your child will outgrow this common condition. In the meantime, it’s a parents’ job to ensure that their self-esteem remains intact and their sleep as undisturbed as possible.
