Infant Dental Health

In this Me and My Baby Program (babies 0 to 12 months), a dental hygienist will give you information on care of baby teeth, when to see your dentist, and how to help with teething. The hygienist will also show you how to check your baby’s gums and teeth.

Backpack Adventures: School Readiness Program

Do you have a child starting school in September 2017? Then the Family Literacy School Readiness program Backpack Adventures is for you. During the 6-week program, we will explore the 5 domains of school readiness. Families will discover new information and activities to support their child’s journey into school. Each session will introduce a new domain and families get to borrow a backpack full of fun activities to practice each new skill at home. On the last session, children will receive a special gift to congratulate them on entering school. Join us for this wonderful adventure!

Three-Year-Olds Don’t Think Like We Do (For parents and caregivers of children 2-3 years old)

Home Alone & Street Proofing

Each participant receives a student manual and a wall certificate.

Home Alone: 2 hours, 9 to 12 years

Based on the Canada Safety Council training course, this program is designed to provide children with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe, responsible and feel more secure when home alone. This workshop will help children develop important techniques when handling potentially dangerous situations. Topics include: Who’s at the door, answering the phone, feeling scared, establishing a routine, what is an emergency, calling 911, basic first aid and what to do in case of a fire or severe storm. Group activities and role-playing are key components to this workshop. 

Street Proofing: 1 hour, 9 to 12 years

This workshop, designed by the Ottawa Safety Council, is geared to help children recognize potentially dangerous situations and develop street-smart personal safety tools. Topics include: Identifying dangerous situations, trusting your instinct, as well as how to make safe choices, keep a safe distance, say NO, attract attention, and identify common lures. The idea of a family password will be introduced, and a family emergency plan worksheet is provided. Through discussions, role-playing and other interactive teaching methods, children will learn vital skills for keeping safe.

Babysitter Training

Babysitting: 8 hours, 12 + years (or turning 12 within the calendar year)

Based on the Canada Safety Council Babysitter Training Course. It is designed to provide current information concerning childcare for young babysitters to use while babysitting and caring for younger siblings. The training will help prevent accidents and promote responsible management of any situation that may arise when children are under their care.

The Babysitter’s Training Course covers such topics as:

  • Becoming a successful babysitter
  • Caring for children from three months to school-aged
  • The behaviour and misbehaviour of children
  • Handling emergencies
  • Caring for a sick or injured child
  • Prevention and basic first aid

Student Reference Book

This book summarizes the course sessions and provides child care information that will be of value to the graduates during their babysitting years and their adult lives. The illustrated reference book includes group exercises and note-taking pages. A summary sheet is included which can be used to collect important information from the employer at the beginning of each babysitting job.

Certification

Each course graduate (passing grade of 75 per cent on the final examination) is presented with a wall certificate and graduation wallet card. These provide validation that the holder has completed eight hours of training and successfully passed a comprehensive examination on the course material.
