Just around the riverbend

Who says you have to travel to find adventure this summer?

Warm weather and sunny days beckon us outwards, outside and outdoors.

Whether setting up a tent in the backyard (practice makes perfect!) or scoping out a cycling route along the Ottawa River Parkway, there’s plenty to enjoy right here at home.

Having done a little sit-down exploring, here are some suggestions that may fill up a summer’s day quite nicely.

For the savvy shopper: Westboro and Parkdale markets are close to home, but have you tried Lansdowne or ByWard to take in farmer fixings, crafts stalls, baked goodies, ice cream offerings and busker entertainment? Who knows, Merry Dairy may have its truck serendipitously parked where you and the kids decide to go.

Be sure to check out the evening markets as well. The Parkdale Night Market runs now through October.

For the sports-minded: Got a runner in the family? Hintonburg has its annual 1km and 5km runs in mid-July. Running Room Ottawa has free weekly runs for all levels if your feet are itching to move.

Head to Andrew Haydon Park where there’s a play structure for kids, a bandshell for outdoor concerts, and a picnic area if you plan to bring a lunch.

Cycling paths take you all the way east to Remic Rapids. If you’re more ambitious, follow the river to the Canadian War Museum and cross to mid-river at Chaudière Falls – so unique and beautiful and truly worthwhile! Your legs and seat may feel it once you get home.

For the happy gardener: More communities are opening plots for green thumbs to hone their skills. No worries if you’re a newbie here: the mentorship and info-sharing are great for introducing you and your kids to the land. Search “Just Food Ottawa” online to find out what’s available close to you. Whether checking out fresh greens or volunteering, there’s such satisfaction in getting dirty for the right reasons.

Life’s a beach:  The perfect solution for getting the dirt off? Take your pick of beaches near you – Westboro, Britannia, Mooney’s Bay, Petrie Island, Rockcliffe Boathouse — and hopefully clear weather will make a day at the beach a sure destination. There’s a new dock at Dow’s Lake by the Experimental Farm intended to be opened for swimming this summer as well.

Summer movies at dusk:  A perfect wind down for a busy day, summer movies are presented behind the Churchill Seniors Centre courtesy of Capital Pop-Up Cinema. Capital presents movies in various locations throughout Ottawa during the summer months. Bring your own blankets, settle in and watch a favourite movie under the stars.
