There’s a camp for every interest

April 8, 2020By Sheryl Bennett-Wilson

Explore the arts with these creative City of Ottawa summer camps

Is there a budding actor, film director or fashion designer in your home? Then there is a City of Ottawa camp for them! These creative summer camps are offered at Shenkman Arts Centre, the Nepean Creative Arts Centre and the Nepean Visual Arts Centre. Not only do youngsters and teens get exposure to the arts, they learn from professional artists and instructors who work in their field.

Budding actors will enjoy the Shakespeare Theatre experience at the Nepean Creative Arts Centre that includes a costumed performance. Designed for 10 to 14 year olds, this camp will have young thespians learning from kid-friendly scripts the beauty of the Bard as well as stage combat, performance techniques and even Shakespearean insults. For the fashionista, Nepean Creative Arts Centre offers My Costume, My Fashion, My Style. Learn how to ‘up-cycle’ clothing for your own distinctive fashion statement. If singing is your thing, learn from a vocal coach all about choral context and harmony at the Song Birds camp at the Nepean Creative Arts Centre. And get out your pens and express yourself in stories and poetry with The Creative Word – taught by a published writer, also at Nepean Creative Arts Centre.

At Shenkman Arts Centre, future Steven Spielbergs will enjoy The Director’s Cut – an opportunity to produce, direct, film and act in your own production. Or learn how to make a music video and shoot a story-based video of your favourite song. And if animation is your thing, Shenkman offers the art of Claymation using stop-motion technology. Dance enthusiasts will love moving to different dance styles and then get to create their own clay masterpieces at the state-of-the-art Gloucester Pottery School studios. Partners Ottawa School of Theatre and Ottawa School of Art also host weekly camps in their Shenkman studios. Link to all of their camp listings through the shenkmanarts.ca website.

Whether you’re a novice or have some experience in the creative arts, there is something for everyone at these camps. Your kids not only get professional guidance, but the opportunity to meet kids with similar interests. Check out what the Shenkman Arts Centre, the Nepean Creative Arts Centre and the Nepean Visual Arts Centre have to offer with their specialized arts programming and get ready for an inspiring and artistic summer camp experience. While we are still waiting on the specific details of the stay-at-home order from the province, the most important detail is this - PLEASE STAY HOME. Only leave the house for essential reasons like getting groceries, picking up a prescription or going to a medical appointment. pic.twitter.com/E8qA…
